What a software engineer actually does

A software engineer designs, builds and maintains the programs that run on phones, websites, servers and machines. The day-to-day is less “typing fast in a dark room” and more solving problems in small steps: understanding what a feature needs to do, breaking it into pieces, writing and testing code, fixing what breaks, and collaborating with designers, testers and product managers. Specialisations include front-end (what users see), back-end (servers and data), mobile, data engineering, DevOps and, increasingly, AI/ML.

The path after Class 10

Choose Science with Mathematics (PCM) if you can — a B.Tech in Computer Science requires it. But this is not a locked gate: BCA and B.Sc Computer Science welcome Commerce students, and many excellent developers came in sideways.
