💼 What a nurse actually does
A nurse assesses patients, administers medication and treatment, monitors recovery and is the constant presence between a patient and the rest of the medical system. Specialisations range widely — critical care (ICU), paediatrics, operation theatre, psychiatric nursing, community health — and experienced nurses move into nurse management, teaching, or higher-paid roles in the Gulf, UK, Canada and Australia, where Indian-trained nurses are in heavy demand.
🧭 The path after Class 10
Take Science with Biology (PCB). Biology is essential, and Physics and Chemistry round out the base for B.Sc Nursing. A student who is sure about nursing can also look at the GNM diploma route after Class 12, but PCB keeps the strongest degree options open.
🎓 The path after Class 12
- B.Sc Nursing (4 years) — the main degree route; most states and central institutions now admit through NEET UG.
- GNM — General Nursing & Midwifery (3 years) — a diploma route; GNM holders can later do a Post-Basic B.Sc Nursing (2 years) to upgrade.
- ANM — Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (approx. 2 years) — a shorter community-health-focused route.
- M.Sc Nursing — for specialisation, teaching and leadership roles, after the B.Sc.

🧩 Is this career right for you?
Nursing suits strong Social interests — a genuine pull toward caring for people — usually paired with Investigative or Realistic leanings for the clinical, hands-on side. If you are the person others stay calm around in a crisis, and you don’t mind demanding, practical work, that is a very good sign.
- PCB is the base; B.Sc Nursing (via NEET UG) is the strongest route, with GNM as a diploma alternative.
- It is one of the most globally portable Indian careers — demand abroad is large and pay there is far higher.
- The work is physically and emotionally demanding; steadiness matters as much as marks.
- Best-fit interests: Social, with Investigative or Realistic. You want to care for people in a practical way.
