Career Options After B.Com in India

By the Lume Live counselling team · Updated July 2026 · 9 min read

B.Com is one of India’s most flexible degrees — and that is exactly why the year after it feels confusing. The options fan out in every direction: professional exams, a Master’s, an MBA, government jobs, or entirely new skill-based careers. This guide lays them out clearly so you can choose on fit, not fear.

Route 1 — Professional qualifications

If you enjoy the finance and accounting side of commerce, the professional route is the classic high-value path: CA (Chartered Accountancy), CS (Company Secretary), CMA (Cost & Management Accountancy), and the internationally recognised ACCA. These are exam-defined, demanding and respected, and B.Com graduates can often use the direct-entry route. See our full guide on how to become a Chartered Accountant.

Route 2 — Higher study (MBA, M.Com)

Route 3 — Government & banking

Commerce graduates are well placed for banking exams (IBPS, SBI PO), RBI Grade B, SSC CGL, and state government roles. These offer stability and are a major reason many B.Com students choose the degree in the first place. The Civil Services (UPSC) are also open to any graduate — see how to join the civil services.

Route 4 — New skill-based careers

You are not confined to accounting. B.Com graduates increasingly move into fast-growing fields:

How to actually decide
  • Love accounting, audit and rules, and can study steadily for years? → CA / CMA / CS.
  • Want leadership and broad business exposure? → MBA.
  • Value stability and a clear exam path? → banking / SSC / government.
  • Drawn to creativity or tech? → digital marketing or data analytics.
